IRC R905.2.6 and IBC 1507.2.6 require asphalt shingles to be fastened per the manufacturer's instructions, and virtually every major manufacturer (GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed, Atlas, Malarkey) specifies 6 nails when the basic wind speed exceeds 110-120 mph (varies by manufacturer and shingle line), on slopes over 60 percent (about 21:12), or when required for the enhanced wind warranty. Four nails is only permitted on standard installations below those thresholds. A few things that will bite you on inspection or a warranty claim: - Nails must hit the common bond/nail line, not above it. High nailing voids the wind rating. - Use 12 gauge minimum, 3/8 inch head, galvanized or stainless, long enough to penetrate 3/4 inch into the deck or fully through sheathing less than 3/4 inch (IRC R905.2.5). - Starter course and hip/ridge often have their own fastening call-outs in the spec sheet; don't assume the field pattern carries over. - For the enhanced wind warranty (e.g., GAF WindProven, OC's 130 mph coverage), you typically also need the manufacturer's starter, ridge cap, and sometimes leak barrier from the same system.
